Egypt lost the away match versus Malawi by a single goal which came in the stoppage time after poor headed clearance from Wael Gomaa. Egypt didn't impress in the match due to absence of many key players and presence of many players who lack the international experience.

The Pharaohs suffered an unexpected defeat in their away match versus Malawi in World Cup first qualifying round. The only goal of the game came in stoppage time to drop Egypt from top to 3rd of the group.

Egypt missed alot of the key players and the coach Shehata had to introduce many new faces. Such big change in the team affected the performance and harmony of the team especially in midfield, wings and the front line.

For the first time in a long time, Amr Zaki and Emad Moteb couldn't play together at front due to injuries. The absence of Zaki in particular contributed much in this defeat.

Egypt looked better in the first half, the Egyptian team created some real chances and was denied a clear penalty. Malawi, on the other hand, played some random football with no clear plan. They did cause alot of confusion to the Egyptian side and they looked dangerous with their long range shots. One of these shots almost went in but Hadary made a great save to deny it.

In the 2nd half, Zaki came on and the underperforming Shikabala was substituted. However, with many newcomers on the field, the Egyptian side couldn't score and it seemed that both teams are heading for a draw in the end.

However, the stoppage time witnessed the winning goal for the homeside which came after a poorly headed clearance by Gomaa, the ball fell to Malawi player Chiukepo Msowoya who blasted it home on the volley leave Hadary with no chance at all.

The defeat did complicate things for Egypt as the Pharaohs fell to the 3rd spot. However, by looking at other groups, Egypt still have a great chance to qualify to the next round either as top team in the group or as one of the better second. However, the Pharaohs will have to win the two home matches versus Malawi and Djibouti.

It should be noted that this round witnessed extremely poor results for Africa's best teams, as Ivory Coast were held to a 1-1 draw while Cameroon drew 0-0 as well. On the other Hand, Morocco and Ghana lost their matches together with Angola.

Saturday's results:
Malawi 1-0 Egypt
