Pharaohs Enjoy Another Success Against Italy

Italy is becoming the magic word for Egyptian football successes. The Pharaohs went to World Cup only when Italy was the host nation. Egyptian seniors achieved their biggest result against Italy in the Confederations cup, and now, Italian Juniors defeat against the young Pharaohs sent the Egyptians to the knock out stages as top of the group.

In a thrilling contest, Egypt managed to go through to the next round of World Cup as top team of the group A. The young Pharaohs defeated their Italian counterparts by four goals to two at Cairo international stadium.

Victory didn't come easy though as the Egyptian defense suffered from lapses of poor concentration which cost the team two soft goals. However, the two reserve players Ahmed Shoukry and Bogy proved their worth as they scored four goals.

From the start, the Egyptian team looked more cohesive than the previous match against Paraguay. This may be due to the differences in class between Paraguay and Italy as the former team player knew how to keep all Egyptian key players out if the game while the Italians failed to do so.

The first Egyptian goal came through a random move. A pass by Islam Ramadan which should have been a thrown-in to Italy went into the box. The ball was poorly cleared by the Italian centre back to find Shoukry on the edge of the box who rifled it into the bottom corner with his left.

Six minutes later, particularly in the 29th minute, Aly Al-Araby made a colossal mistake as he missed clearance on the edge of the box which resulted in a low shot on goal, Eusepi collected the ball and sent it past Aly Lotfy to level the score.

Just before the half time whistle, Ahmed Shoukry scored his second goal in the game to give the Pharaohs the lead once again before half time. Shoukry received Islam Ramadan's cross from the left wing and put the ball into the back of the net with his right. The ball was deflected off an Italian defender to deceive the goalkeeper and go in.

In the 53rd minute, the Italian centre back Albertazzi brought Italy back into the game once more from a corner kick. He rose completely unchallenged to score from a free header from inside the six yards box.

In the 69th minute, Bogy came on to succeed in what Talaat failed in in this match and the previous matches as he headed the ball home from close range to give the young Pharaohs the lead once more.

Ten minutes later, Bogy scored from a fine move as he received the ball on his chest under pressure and sent it home with a superb half volley to ensure Egypt's win.

With this result, Egypt will qualify to the first knock out stage as top of group A.

EP's Man of the Match:

Bogy while Shoukry will come second. Bogy provided the Egyptian team with two goals, he offered what Talaat lacked. Good positioning in front of goal and simple finishing without trying many fancy tricks that never worked for Talaat so far.

Notes:

  • Two players came from the bench to defeat Italy. In the past two matches, none of them played. This proves that the current selection of the team is not the best. Shoukry and Body have to start.
  • The Egyptian right back Aly Al-Araby cost the Egyptian team the first goal. He continued to fall in mistakes till the final whistle and his contribution in attack was very poor. A replacement in the right back should be introduced in the next match.
  • The Egyptian keeper Lotfy does well most of the time but he is quite poor in defending freekicks and corners. He didn't provide enough cover in the 2nd goal as he remained in his goal instead of trying to collect the cross giving Albertazzi the chance to score from a free header.
  • The return of Hegazy in the heart of defense in the upcoming match will provide strength to the Egyptian defense which is certainly the main weakness in the Egyptian squad.
