Egypt friendlies and squad announced
Date: 23-3-2004
Wrote: EP's reporter Ahmed Abo El Dahab

The Egyptian national team will play Trinidad & Tobago, BRAZIL, Chelsea (England) and Paris Saint-Germain (France). Meanwhile, the new care-taker coach Fathy Mabrouk has announced the 20 players selected to play against Trinidad & Tobago on the 31st of this month.

Coming friendlies:

It is reported that Egypt will play Trinidad & Tobago (Wednesday the 31st), followed by Brazil! Also, they are looking to play two big European clubs, Chelsea of England and Paris Saint-Germain of France. The games will be played in the Cairo Stadium.

No Players from Abroad:

Egypt, who are still without a manager, will look at this game as a preparation match before they begin playing this summer in their World Cup Qualification group. The temporary coach has decided not to call up any player playing abroad, which means that the 20 players are all playing in the Egyptian League. This comes after clubs such as Feyenoord announced that they will keep their players at the club as they need them.

Hossam Hassan called back:

Mabrouk has recalled some players who were left out of the Egyptian squad which played in the last ACN. He is also giving new players their first international cap.

Egyptian veteran Hossam Hassan has been recalled to the squad for the first time in two years. His last international match came against Cameroon in the ACN 2002 Quarter Final. The Egyptian man who will turn 38 next summer, has scored 78 international goals for his country so far. He is very will known across Africa and all over the world and this especially came after he was named as the most capped player in the world by Fifa three years ago. The Zamalek forward's performance at his club in the last couple of matches showed that he still has a lot to offer for both club and nation, as a target striker.

On the other hand, Al-Ahly's goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, will be also recalled to the squad. He was left out for a long time by Egypt's former boss Mohsen Saleh, due to his bad performances at the beginning of this season. But he was able to regain much of it in the second half.

There will be a couple of new faces in the squad. Al-Ahly's new signing Mohamed Abo-Trekka has been called up, as well as his team-mates Osama Hosny and Ahmed El-Sayed. Ismaily's Mohamed Abdallah and Hosni Abd-Rabo are also in the squad, besides ENPPI striker Amro Zaki.

Abo-Trekka has been on brilliant form since joining from Tersana in the winter break. His team-mates Osam Hosny and Ahmed El-Sayed are two young players with great potential. Osama has been in good form all season and proved that it's not only Belal who can play at forward for Ahly. This is while Ahmed El-Sayed's performances recently have helped his club to turn to 2nd place in the league and qualify to the Arab Champions League's Second Round. Both Mohamed Abdallah and Hosni Abd-Rabo's performances for their club was great. Abd-Rabo has in fact received interest from Europe. He was one of the members of the Egyptian U-20 squad in the last World Cup in the Emirates and is said to have caught the eyes of many clubs in Belgium and France. On the other hand, Amr Zaki was left out of the Egyptian U-20 squad due to injury. The striker has good skills and is very powerful in the air. As for Mohamed Abdallah, he can play on both the right and left flanks and his skills and runs can help him develop lots of crosses for the attackers. EP hope that they keep up their form and that the cunning eye does not affect them...

The Egyptian team will begin preparation for this match on the 29th of the current month, before playing two days later. On the other hand, both Nader El Sayed and Hazem Emam have been left out of the squad.

Belal injury wounds Egyptian football:

Meanwhile Ahmed Belal was injured while playing in Algeria in the Arab Champions League. He suffered a cruciate ligament and so won't see the pitches for six months! This comes as a big blow for the Egyptian team, especially that one isn't sure whether he will return to his top form again.

Test for Mabrouk:

The temporary coach Fathy Mabrouk said that the match will be a good preparation one for the team, as Trinidad have got a good team who have a number of players playing their football in England. (Note: It is expected that these top players do not join in in that game). Meanwhile, it should be mentioned that the EFA hope to announce the new manager in the coming weeks, and the latest addition to the shortlist is Frenchman Henri Kasperczak.

The Egypt Squad:

Goalkeepers: Essam El-Hadary (Al-Ahly), Abdelwahed El-Sayed (Zamalek).

Defence: Moatasem Salem (Ismaily), Tarek El-Sayed (Zamalek), Ahmed El-Sayed, Wael Gomaa, Ahmed Abo-Mosallem (Al-Ahly), Ahmed Fathy (Ismaily), Osama Hassan (ENPPI).

Midfield:
Tamer Abdel-Hamid, Tarek El-Saeed (Zamalek), Hassan Mustafa, Mohamed Shawky, Mohamed Abo-Trekka (Al-Ahly), Hosni Abd-Rabo, Mohamed Abdallah (Ismaily).

Forward: Hossam Hassan, Abdel-Halim Ali (Zamalek) Osama Hosny (Al-Ahly), Amr Zaki (Enppi).
