New Manager almost did the Magic

Date: 20-10-2004

Hany Said's new boss at Mons in Belgium has been decided following the departure of his former manager. Jos Daerden is the new man at the helm.

It was the new manager Jos Daerden who was the man under the spotlight for the game. The coach had just left Genk as assistant manager, for the head manager job at Mons. Daerden returned to Genk for his debut Mons game.

Hany Said started in midfield, and played the full 90 minutes.
Just 3 minutes into the game, the Egyptian was booked for an awful foul. An uneasy start to the game.

A minute later Mohamed Aliyu Datti struck a shot that put Mons into a surprise lead on away turf!
It didn't take long for Genk to equalise, as they did so in the 11th minute.Kevin Vandenbergh scored after an easy chance.

Not long later, Genk should have taken the lead when Wamfor played a superb ball to Vandenbergh, but the latter missed an amazing opportunity.

Pressure continued from Genk, but they wasted a number of chances.

In the 25th minute the home crowd thought that the pressure had paid off when Vandenbergh latched onto a through ball and scored it. The flag was raised however, and the goal cancelled.
The first half finished 1-1, with Genk showing attacking intent and Mons being saved on several occasions by their goalkeeper.

In the 52nd minute, Vandenbergh played the ball square to the Mons manager's son, Daerden, who passed to Camargo. The Brazilian forward hit the ball but it was saved by Van de Putte yet again.
Not long later, Genk managed to finally go in front. Miguel scored hitting the ball past the goalie. 2-1.
The home side looked better all throughout the game, but in the 84th minute the shock equaliser went in. Orlando Engelaar scored the equaliser.

A minute later, a fight broke out between midfielder Nicolas Goussé and the Mons manager's son, Genk's Daerden.

The final whistle went, with the Mons manager winning tactically in taking away the three points that should have been won by his former side.

Mons are just two positions off the bottom, with only 6 points. The club behind them has 6 points as well, with bottom place on 4 points.
