Hany Said: A troubled Egyptian player
Date: 15-5-2002
Wrote: Webmaster

Few years ago, Hany Said was one of the Egyptian hot prospects as defender. He caught the eye of Italian Serie A side AS Bari but since his arrival, he didn't play regular first team football in his first year.

In the 2nd year he started to participate with his team during the final phase of Serie A. Unfortunately for Hany, his team ended last and has been relegated to Serie B. Read this special report on Said:

Success phase:

After long weeks of being benched, Said's coach decided to run the risk and give the player the chance to express himself and to introduce a new talent to Italian Serie A. Bari were fighting against relegation but Said made the difference, he played as defensive midfielder and he marked many of the big boys in the Serie A.

Said was a solid and determinant performer on the field and he gained respect from his coach as he provided a link between the defense of his team and their attack, with Said's dribbling skills, vision , anticipation and great determination, he booked a permanent place among the starting eleven.

Said shined once in Serie A when he scored a marvelous goal against Verona, his goal was chosen as GOAL OF THE WEEK in Serie A. (Download the goal from multimedia page)

Relegation phase:

AS Bari's unfortunate Said relegated to Serie B and the club sold his best player Antonio Cassano to the Serie A winners AS Roma. Our Said continued to impress as regular player with AS Bari but this time in the shade. (Read Said's older reports by EP from professionals page 2)

Said's AS Bari continued to stutter in Serie B match after match, and it was clear that the former Serie A team will never see the light again next season as they lie currently in the 10th position after 35 game while they still have three games in hand, but the promotion dream became impossible.

Ban Phase:

After carrying out a random dope testing for Egyptian national team players, Said's sample was positive which was confirmed by another analysis for a 2nd sample for the player. The presence of one of illegal steroids in Said's sample meant that the player will face a serious ban sooner or later.

CAF banned the player for 6 months starting from the date of the incident (30 January 2002) and consequently, the regular with AS Bari faced similar ban from participation in Serie B matches till the end of season.

Only 3 matches in March:

Friday March 1st, 2002: BARI - SAMPDORIA (1-1):

Hany Said played full game against Sampdoria.

Sunday March 10th, 2002: BARI - VICENZA (2-1):

Hany participated in the game as he was selected as substitute and replaced Collauto at the start of the 2nd half.

Friday March 15th, 2002: GENOA - BARI (2-0):

Hany played as a starter but he was replaced by D'Agostino in the half-time break.
