Hany Said to EP: "Still a Viola player"

Date: 5-3-2004
Wrote: EP's reporter Islam Issa

EXCLUSIVE: For the first time, EgyptianPlayers.com spoke to the Egyptian in Italy, Hany Said. The player told EP his thoughts on his current status, as well as news on his offers and plans.

EP phoned Hany Said for a short interview. The Egyptian international, who turned out extremely familiar with EP, cleared up his latest news after there had been many rumours flying around.

EP: The fans want to know quite simply: which club are you at?

HS: I am currently playing for Fiorentina-Viola in Serie B...

EP: But there were talks about you and Perugia, Catania and Ankaragucu...

HS: Indeed I received a transfer offer from Turkey, from Ankaragucu, and also from a Division One club in England. But I preferred not to go to Turkey until I finish my contract at Fiorentina. And also Catania from Serie B offered for me. I will consider all the offers when I finish here, but I will complete my contract with Fiorentina though, and God be with me.

EP: At first, you were playing regularly at Fiorentina. Why did you and Helguera stop playing a few months ago?

HS: As you know, I'm regarded as a professional player here. I am under the control of the club. I played in the Coppa Italia and in some of the Serie B matches, but the manager chooses another player usually. But it is up to them so I just train like usual as I am under their control...

EP: Well, what went wrong in the Cup of Nations?

HS: Well to be honest I didn't want to talk about this. As you saw, Captain Mohsen Saleh put me in the place he wanted, but I would have preferred to play in midfield, and it's his decision. And this time has passed and InshAllah we can do something in the World Cup Qualifiers...

EP: Well, are you a defender or a midfielder and which do you prefer?

HS: I'll tell you something, if you know, when I was playing at Ahly and playing for the Egypt Youths, I was playing at libero. Since I came abroad to Italy and Bari, I played in midfield. The managers here say that I'm suited to midfield. Even when I was in Switzerland on loan I was in midfield. So I learnt that position completely and I prefer it now, 'in my heart', as they say. But as you know Mohsen Saleh played me in a friendly just before the African Cup of Nations and he played me then as libero. He saw that I excelled in that position and it was his choice...

EP thanked Hany Said for the brief interview.

HS: Finally, I'd like to say to EgyptianPlayers.com that I'll try my best to make you proud. It's been a big privilege for me to speak to you...

EP will continue to bring you more exclusive content on all of the Egyptians abroad...
