Season Review: Hany Ramzy

Date: 2-7-2004
Wrote: EP's webmaster Yasser Zohny

Hany Ramzy was the most unfortunate Egyptian player this season. The veteran centre back suffered a bad injury in the first official game which kept him away from action to date.

Phase I: Injured in the first Bundesliga match (3rd August 2003):

During Kaiserslautern's first Bundesliga game versus 1860 Munchen and with a few minutes until the break, Kaiser got a corner. Ramzy was free to header but did not do it well, and seemed to twist a part of his leg in the process of jumping.

The player was then substituted during the half time break and his knee injury looked more bad than it initially looked. It was later diagnosed was a return of Hany's cruciate ligament injury he had suffered towards the end of last season.

Phase II: Kaiserslautern signs Mettomo to replace Hany; Kaiser keep sinking:

As the Egyptian veteran defender Hany Ramzy wasn't expected to see action with the Red Devils for several months because of his injury, the club signed Cameroonian international Lucien Mettomo from Manchester City as a replacement for the Egyptian centre back.

Moreover, the club trialed a Brazilian defender named Emerson. However, these attempts to replace the veteran Egyptian Hany Ramzy weren't successful as the Red Devils continued their awful league form and suffered a humiliating exit from the German cup (DFB Pokal) at the hands of an amatuer side by four goals to one.

As well as this, Hany Ramzy's Kaiserslautern ended their European campaign early as they suffered their 2nd defeat at the hands of the Czech side FC Teplice in the UEFA Cup by a single goal. The Red Devils failed to recover from their 1-2 defeat in the first leg and continued to stutter in the 2nd leg match.

At end of season, Kaiser only managed to escape relegation by ending in the 15th spot (Just one step away from the relegation zone).

Phase III: Ramzy recovers (May 2004):

In an interview, the player confirmed that his knee is in good shape and he will start training soon. He also was confident about his return to official games in the new season:

"I'm very happy at the moment, the knee's in good shape, and, I've set my sights on the new campaign, and I'm hoping to take part in close season training."

"My first priority is just to get playing again after the injury."

"I desperately want to play again, taking part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany with Egypt would be a dream come true." Said the 35 year old Egyptian.

Phase IV: A new Kaiserslautern on the horizon:

By looking at the names of the new signings, Hany Ramzy's side may have a much better start in the coming season.

Carsten Janker: The Red Devils managed to sign EX Bayern Munchen's striker Carsten Janker to replace Miroslav Klose who signed for Werder Bremen. The experienced forward will surely add strength to Kaiserslautern's attack.

Ferydoon Zandi: The Germany U-21 squad midfielder agreed terms with Hany Ramzy's FCK. The player was on top of the shortlists of many Bundesliga clubs after scoring 13 times in Bundesliga II.

Ioannis Amanatidis: The Greek international striker joined Kaiserslautern coming from the relegated side, Eintracht Frankfurt. He will play alongside Carsten Janker in the front-line. It is enough to know that the player is among the Greek EURO 2004 team which managed to reach the final to know how well he can perform together with Janker in the front line.

Marco Engelhardt: Another midfielder joined from Karlsruhe.
