Ramzy's Kaiser end 2003 on thin ice

Date: 28-12-2003.
Wrote: EP's reporter Islam Issa

It's been a while since EP updated on Hany Ramzy's club FC Kaiserslautern. The Egyptian veteran suffered a serious injury in his first Bundesliga match this season, and as a result has been out of action. Since then, Kaiserslautern have battled but have found themselves constantly just above the relegation zone.

Bottom 6:

13th Monchengladbach- 19 points
14th 1860 München- 19 points
15th Kaiserslautern- 15 points
16th Koln- 13 points
17th Hertha- 13 points
18th Eintracht- 12 points

Kaiser are just two points off the relegation positions, and the middle of the table is eight points away from them. Losing nine of seventeen games, it's been a similar season to the last.

Inconsistency has somewhat cost Kaiserslautern, who have not won in sequences. Their most notable performance saw them victor 4-0 against Hamburg. They have however had problems in defence without Ramzy, and conceded four goals to all of Bochum, Bayern Munich, Hansa Rostock and Wolfsburg. As well as this, they lost 4-1 to Eintracht Braunschweig in the Cup earlier this year, a bad result for a team that were runners-up last time round. The Uefa Cup was also a bad experience, as they lost straight away to Teplice (who went on to beat Ghaly's Feyenoord in the next round).

It still remains to be seen whether Kaiser will stay up. It should be remembered that last season they were in a similar situation but crawled up and ended in a respectable position. The absence of Ramzy seems to have made a difference, and the summer sale of defender Harry Koch also weakened the experience of the team. One of the last things they wanted was not to have their two experienced defenders.

EP hope that Ramzy can return and help his club in their campaign. It is also worth mentioning that in the past, the player said that now that he is in his thirties, it is possible that he could return to Al-Ahly, or even retire...
