Season Review: Hany Ramzy at Kaiserslautern

Date: 19-6-2003.
Wrote: EP's webmaster

The current season can be simply described as the most unfortunate season for Hany Ramzy in his career. Early in the season, he was hospitalized because of lung TB, and the Red Devils had their worst season in years. In addition to this, The veteran Pharaoh suffered a long tern knee injury which kept him away from the pitch till now.

Preseason:

The preseason phase proved that Kaiserslautern didn't prepare well for the new season. They didn't sign any big-named player because of the financial problems at the club. The Red Devils played a friendly tournament in Austria (Alpen Cup) where they won the 3rd place after a 0-4 defeat at the hands of Fenerbahce and a 1-0 win over Feyenoord.

The season:

Early in the season and after a series of disappointing performances, Kaiser's coach Andy Brehme was sacked and a new manager took control of the club. The new manager (Eric Gerets) received an early shock immediately after his arrival as our veteran defender suffered a lung infection which was later diagnosed as lung Tuberculosis.

Ramzy was hospitalized for months because of this shocking illness and missed almost all Kaiserslautern's games till the winter beak where he came back strong and scored in his first game against Freiburg in the German cup.

After the return of Ramzy to the squad, things reverted to normal and the team's form started gradually to improve. However, the battle against relegation proved to be tough as the club already wasted many valuable points in the first half of the season but the club succeeded to end in the 14th spot in the end and only one place away from the relegation zone.

Near the end of season, Ramzy helped his side to qualify for the German cup final and scored his 2nd goal of the season against Bochum but unfortunately, he suffered a serious injury in his right knee which kept him away from the green pitch to date.

Next season expectations:

The club sold its veteran defender Harry Koch to a 2nd division side. As well as this, the team's captain Mario Basler signed to a club in Qatar. Ramzy himself received an offer from another Qatari club. The player didn't decide yet whether he will continue with the Red Devils for another year or accept offers.

It is hard to predict whether Kaiserslautern will be able to compete for the title in the coming season or they will battle against relegation. The club will start the next season without Basler and Koch and they need to sign players of comparable quality. The preseason phase which will start early next month and their new signings will show the real potential of the club and their chances next season.
