Hassan Returns as Besiktas Hold Fener

Date: 1-3-2006
Wrote by: EP's reporters in Turkey Ali Avci & & Kaan Beyazit

Ahmed Hassan's Besiktas won one point in the Istanbul derby during their worst of form. Besiktas have traditionally led the derby challenge against Fenerbahce and the Eagles continued the tradition again. Hassan played an excellent match and was involved in both his teams goals, in the 2-2 draw

Fenerbahçe the leader in the Turkcell Süperlig had to face arch rivals Besiktas this weekend in the derby between Europe and Asia (Fenerbahçe being in the Asian part of Istanbul and Besiktas in the European part). Earlier this year Fenerbahçe beat Besiktas 2-1 after a Tuncay stunner in added time just after Kléberson’s equiliser on the 90th minute.

Although Fener had won the first match, they knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task for them, knowing they hadn’t beaten Besiktas in 5 years in their own Sükrü Saraçoglu stadium, a record only Besiktas had the honour to uphold. Last year Besiktas beat Fenerbahçe in a miraculous 4-3 victory.

Ahmed Hassan, who was earlier fined by Jean Tigana, wasn’t expected to start in the first eleven after rumours went flying that he had been sacked to the “Paf-Takim” (B-squad). The rumours seemed to be untrue; Tigana knows the worth of the African Cup’s player of the tournament and put him on the field.

The Besiktas midfield consisted of: Sergen Yalçin(captain), Tümer Metin, Ahmed Hassan and José Kléberson. Fenerbahçe played with Alex, Aurelio, Appiah and Tuncay Sanli in the midfield.

Fenerbahçe started the match fiercely trying to score that early and important first goal. But Besiktas withheld the pressure, and stood strong on their feet, although Nobre had a huge chance getting the ball from Anelka in a counter opportunity. He should have scored but Cordoba made an amazing reflex save. Then in a dead-ball situation, the ball just missed the head of Fenerbahçe defender Luciano and Cordoba tipped over. After half an hour, Besiktas started to take control of the midfield and had their first chances.

Gökhan Güleç was sent away by Tümer and came one on one with Rüstü, just flicking the ball past Rüstü who rushed the young striker. Appealed for a penalty were turned down! The referee didn’t see a penalty in it and just gave a goal kick, even though it was clearly an obstruction offence from the Fenerbahçe goalkeeper.
Besiktas had some chances from outside the box from Sergen, just shooting over the crossbar and Kléberson doing the same. Stephen Appiah of Fenerbahçe also launched a fierce shot only for Cordoba to save it supremely once again.

In the 44th minute Sergen was sent away by Tümer, just shooting wide. This was the biggest chance for Besiktas, with Sergen one on one with Rüstü but missing the target by a few inches. Directly on the other side of the pitch, Anelka shot hard, Cordoba pushing the ball to safety and out for a corner, before the referee Selçuk Dereli decided it was time for coffee.

Second half:

Fenerbahçe tried to put Besiktas under pressure directly after the second half whistle was blown, having lost control of the match in the first half to the Black Eagles. An easily given free kick in the 51st minute resulted in the first goal; Alex crossing the ball into the box from the free kick, and Tuncay heading the ball in form close range at the far post. A fowl by Onder Turaci on Atan Cagdas was neglected and left Besiktas stunned.

Besiktas were not impressed by the quick goal and looked for an equaliser. Besiktas’ midfield dominated the battle in the middle and Fenerbahçe had no answer to it. After Ibrahim Akin was brought in by Jean Tigana for the defensive wing back Mehmet Sedef, Besiktas really began to put pressure on Fenerbahçe, Tümer crossed in a long ball towards Sergen in the 67th minute, and Sergen took the ball on his chest with great class before shooting into a bunch of defenders. The rebound came to Ahmed Hassan who’s shot was also blocked, and Sergen volleyed the deflected ball and scored a great goal. Rüstü stood stunned in his goal, with Sergen’s perfect technique bringing the equaliser.

Besiktas didn’t hold back and started searching for a potential winner. Tigana took out the tired Gökhan Güleç and brought in Brazilian striker Bob. Kléberson crossed in the ball in the 72nd minute, but Bobo just missed the ball with his head. The ball found Hassan instead who stayed very calm in the box and tried to find Bobo again with a low cross. Bobo almost hit it home but a defender cleared poorly with the ball ending up at the feet of Sergen Yalçin, who simply tapped the ball in to make it 2-1.

Fenerbahçe didn’t know what hit them. Luckily for Fener, Dereli gave them an unjust corner kick. For once Mustafa Dogan didn’t watch his man, Marcio Nobre, who headed in the corner from Alex just 5 minutes after Sergen’s second goal. Daum then brought in Semih Sentürk instead of Tuncay Sanli. Semih directly got a huge opportunity but again Cordoba was there to clean it up.

Besiktas kept dominating the midfield but no more goals where scored. Hassan provided great width for his side on some counter-attacking occasions, but his team-mates failed to find him in his clear space.

Besiktas haven’t lost in “Kadiköy” for six consecutive years now, and plan to keep it that way. Besiktas again prove to be the “black beast” of Fener. Man of the match was Sergen Yalçin.
