Date: 4-1-2006
Wrote: EP's reporters in Turkey Ali Avci and Abdullah Apaydin

Ahmed Hassan was announced by a Turkish newspaper as the most useful foreign player of 2005 at Besiktas. Hassan then spoke to reporters, indicating that he is happy at the Turkish club but that he is being followed by English sides. To add to this, many changes are starting at Besiktas in regard to their foreign players. EP presents the latest from the club.

Hassan Speaks:

"I am very happy with Besiktas and I want to stay," said the Egypt captain to Zaman.

"The Besiktas board and technical staff are effective in making me want to stay.

"I love Turkey so I want to stay here but if I do decide to leave Turkey and Besiktas I'll use my options from England. Some English clubs want me."

In the past, Bolton Wanderers were said to be after Hassan, and this may be the case once more. The club have a habit of buying experienced foreigners, and Hassan is in his early thirties and so it would be no surprise. However, the Egyptian Prince has constantly confirmed his desire to remain at the Eagles, and may well end his European career there.

Hassan Most Useful Foreigner:

Besiktas were unsuccessful in reaching their targets in 2005. They were eliminated from the UEFA Cup and weren't successful in the Turkcell Super League, despite transferring world class players to help the cause such as Ailton and Kleberson.

Besiktas have 6 foreign players in their squad: Ahmed Hassan, Youla, Ailton, Kleberson, Pancu and Cordoba. But one of them is different from the others.

Zaman wrote that Ahmed Hassan shines with his great work-rate and teamwork in an unsuccessful Besiktas squad. Neither Tigana nor Riza Calimbay replaced him with anyone.

Ahmed Hassan has so far this season played 16 first team games in 20, and has attempted 24 times to get a goal, but has been successful on 4 occasions. He has 336 passes which have reached a good target and has won 29 tackles. Ahmed Hassan played 23 games in 2004 and scored 11 times.

Ailton and Youla who've transferred to get goals weren't as useful. Ailton scored 5 and Youla scored 6 in the first half of this season, and supporters aren't satisfied with their poor performances.

Tigana Unhappy About ACN:

Coach Jean Tigana has told press that he, like many managers, is reluctant to let his African player Ahmed Hassan leave for the African Cup. The manager said that the tournament annoys him, and that he is unhappy about it. He is also unhappy that Ahmed Hassan will be absent for the start of the second half of the season, as the Pharaoh plays a part in his tactical plans.

Other Foreigners On Their Way Out:

The disappointing Daniel Pancu has joined Ittehad of Saudi Arabia after an poor season in Turkey. The club managed to sell him despite the fact his contract is finishing this year, and got over €2 million from the transfer.

Meanwhile, striker Souleymane Youla is set for a move to Hosni Abd Rabo's Strasbourg, although other French clubs are also in the race.

Ailton, the anti-climax of the season, is on Koln's shortlist and looks like he will be heading out of Turkey after failing to make an impact or gain popularity.
