Veteran
Swiss striker Alexander Frei completed his move to FC
Basel today. Frei and Valdez were the preferred striking
duo for Dortmund in the last season with Zidan coming
on from bench in the 2nd half. With Frei out to Basel,
Zidan should find no problems to start for Dortmund
next season.
Alexander Frei will leave Germany's Borussia
Dortmund to play for Basel in his native Switzerland:
"There is agreement. Alexander Frei will travel
to Switzerland for the medical on Saturday," Dortmund
sports director Michael Zorc.
The striker put much pressure on the coach
Jurgen Klopp by requesting to leave the club when the
German coach preferred Zidan over him.
However, the situation has changed now
to the better for Zizou as he will find less competition
for the striker position.
Zidan is expected to play alongside the
Paraguayan Nelson Valdez next season instead of Frei.
The 27 year old Egyptian claimed interest from Valencia
in signing him but as his first team chances has been
boosted, he will likely prefer to stay with Dortmund
next season.
It should be noted that Dortmund will start the 2nd phase
of preseason preparations today. In this hase, they will play
a few friendly matches including Mainz and a tournament involving
Udinese and Valencia.
