Despite taking the lead by a single goal
which came through Frei and was assisted superbly by
Zidan, Bremen won the game in the end as Almeida scored
froma volley shot while Pizarro added the winning goal
later on despite the numerous chances that Dortmund
and Zidan had. Zidan was replaced after the equalizer
by Valdez but the latter didn't offer much.
Dortmund ended their German Cup run by
a 1-2 home defeat at the hands of Werder Bremen. Despite
taking the lead early on through Frei, Werder Bremen
equalized through Almeida and the goal was the turning
point in the game as it allowed the guests to have more
confidence and score the winning goal via Pizarro.
Zidan played the game alongside Frei at
front. The Egyptian ran the show in the first half.
He provided an excellent assist to cap a fine counter
attacking move for Dortmund.
The goal came against the run of play
as Werder Bremen had more possession. On the other hand,
Dortmund relied on counter attacking moves which is
Zidan's strongest point.
Since Dortmund relied on counter attacks,
Zidan got a golden opportunity to score as he received
a fine through pass which put him in the clear in front
of goal. He tried to chip the keeper with his left but
the ball was denied by the post and went wide.
Minutes later, Zidan ha another good chance
to score as he managed to beat the offside trap tried
to bury the ball past the peer but the latter turned
his shot away for a corner.
In the 2nd half, Werder Bremen increased their
pressure and Almeida scored a goal from close range but it
was ruled out for offside.
On the other hand, Dortmund had a few good chances
to score. On of them was squandered by Zidan as he tried a
shot from inside the box but was denied by the keeper once
again.
In the 62nd minute, Almeida volleyed a surprising
shot home from the edge of the box to equalize for the guests.
The goal was the turning point in the game as Dortmund lost
their confidence and allowed Bremen to take the game to them.
Zidan started to lose his concentration after Almeida's goal
and so, he was replaced by Nelson Valdez.
In the 80th minute, Pizarro scored the winning
goal for Bremen to send them to the quarter finals.
