Zidan Booed By Dortmund Fans:

The worst thing for a footballer is to get booed by his own fans. This is what happened to Egyptian striker Mohamed Zidan in Borussia Dortmund's home clash with Schalke 04 which ended in a 3-3 draw.

Zidan played the game from the start but couldn't impress. In fact, the club board admitted that the whole team looked lost in the first 60 minutes of the game which led to them getting behind by three goals without reply.

However, the club supporters made Zidan their scrap goat by booing him as he came off.

Board Back Zizou:

Dortmund club board criticized the act of fans against the Egyptian, they mentioned that the whole team was underperforming and it is not wise to boo a player as it will result in him losing confidence even further.

Will Zidan succeed At Dortmund?

While it is early to say, Zidan by looks of it will not be successful at Dortmund. It will most likely be the same situation as HSV and Werder Bremen where he joined those clubs with big hype surrounding him, but in the end he failed to secure him a spot in the starting eleven.

Dortmund play very physical football, pace and strength in duels are the key. Zidan can't play well under pressure and is poor in the air, which makes things harder for him. His main strength is the ability to beat his man with skill and pace which doesn't work well for him because of the pressure which can shut down his skills.

Will Zidan succeed only in small clubs?

Many fans are wondering why Zidan succeeded in Denmark and with Mainz but couldn't be successful at bigger clubs like Bremen, Dortmund and HSV.

Zidan can be a success in bigger teams but he will have to join a league that can suit his style of play. We all saw Zaki failing to make his debut in Russia but he took English Premiership by storm. He is the same player, but in a different league. Zaki is a player who is built for English Premiership and so is Mido. So, they succeeded there.

Another examples are Andrei Shevchenko, who was one of the best in the world when he played for AC Milan but turned to by a flop buy at Chelsea. Another example is Tierry Henry, who failed miserably in Juventus but had a huge success with Arsenal, then again, he didn't impress with Barca.

Zidan succeeds with small teams because these teams play the counter attacking tactic which requires a speedy forward to take advantage of the gaps in defense. Also, skill in one on one situation is a huge asset for teams adopting this tactic and so, Zidan is the ideal player for those teams. He is fast, his acceleration and ability to beat his man with pace and skill are top notch. Also, this tactic won't let require good aerial abilities, a thing that is a major weakness in Zidan.

However, bigger teams play possession football, they keep the ball more and pass it under pressure in narrow paces till they find a small gap to shoot or make the killer pass which gives them the advantage to score. In those teams, the player must be strong to win the ball in 50/50 challenges, he also must be able to keep the ball under pressure from opponents and have good off the ball skills to move quickly to better positions to get the ball again.

This tactic doesn't fit Zidan at all. We all saw how Zidan was poor in the ACN match versus Sudan when the Sudanese team used harsh tackling to stop the Egyptian. However, against Cameroon, Zidan was simply brilliant in the counter attack that led to the 2nd goal, and also when his used his skills to score from a long range effort.

However, there are some leagues that can allow skilled players have the creative freedom that they need in order to show their potential. In Germany, there is no such thing called creative freedom. Bundesliga and German national team is a team with strong tactics. It is surely a lackluster football but it wins them trophies.

Leagues that favor technical play over strong tactics are the Spanish league, French league and Dutch league. Such leagues give huge advantage to technical players like Zidan show what they can do. A proof for this is Middlesbrough striker Afonso Alves who scored more than 30 goals for Heeerenveen in the Dutch league but so far, he scored only a goal from a freekick. On the other hand, Mido scored 4 goals as the Egyptian is more suited to the Premiership with his strength, ability to win challenges in the air, and ability to hold the ball under pressure.

Zidan should consider moving to Spain in the nearest future. This should give him the ultimate chance to become the world class forward that he dreams to be. It should be noted that Zidan himself said that his dream is to play for Real Madrid and that the Spanish and French leagues are the best leagues that suit his style of play. However, it is at least questionable why he wastes the best years of his career in a league that will never suit him?!
