In a close encounter, Leverkusen managed to win by a single goal against Mohamed Zidan's HSV. The only goal of the game came via the Greek striker Gekas who headed home from a corner kick to give his side the advantage before facing HSV in the Nord Bank Arena next week in the 2nd leg.

HSV played with their regular 4-3-3 formation with Van der Vaart as support man, Trochoveski on the right wing and Olic on the left while Guerrero played the role of the lone striker.

Mohamed Zidan was on bench and only came on to replace Guerrero who was unhappy with his substitution.

Zidan got the ball like three or four times, but he did extremely well everytime he got the ball. The Egyptian also had a chance to score but a delayed pass from Kompany resulted in him getting into an offside position.

The match was pretty even and the chances were slim. However, Gekas looked dangerous in more than occasion and kept trying in the 2nd half till he scored from a powerful header.

The result means HSV will have to win by two goals to nil in order to advance to the next round. While the job is not impossible, they will have to guard against conceding any goal as away goals could mean their exit in case of a draw.
