Mainz faced a tough opponent who are competing for a spot in Europe next season. However, Zidan and his teammates created some real chances in the first 25 minutes. The best chance for Zidan came when he fired a shot from outside the box into the top corner but the goalkeeper managed to made an excellent fingertip save and turned Zizou's shot away for a corner.

Mainz forwards couldn't concentrate enough in front of goal otherwise they would be leading the game by two goals at least. On the other side, Leverkusen took their chances well and scored through Barbarez in the 42nd and 45th minutes.

In the 2nd half, Leverkusen scored their 3rd through Schneider. The goal came from a freekick just outside the box and Schneider placed the ball superbly above the wall and into the far corner.

The goal meant that Mainz can only hope to reduce the deficit and Zidan was the only player who showed the determination to go forward and score.
