Near the end of the first half, Brazilian defender Naldo
almost scored for Werder from a well placed header after
a cross from the left but his attempt went just wide.
Mainz replied with a counter attack and their
forward Weisland tested the goalkeeper Reinke with a shot
from the edge of the box but the latter made a fine save
and turned the ball away for a corner.
In the 40th minute, Nelson Valdez clawed a
goal back for Werder when he controlled the ball well on
the edge of the area, turned to face the goal and fired
a low shot with his left into the far corner to make the
score 1-2.
In the 45th minute, Johan Micoud headed the
ball home after a cross from the right wing to level the
score.
In the same minute, things got even worse
for Mainz as Klasnic scored the 3rd goal for the homeside
to make the score 3-2. The goal came through a fatal mistake
from the substitute goalkeeper of Mainz who came out of
his net in a bad timing to allow Klasnic round him and score.
In the 2nd half, Bremen increased their pressure
and Mainz were forced to defend. The homeside created more
chances through Borowski and Valdez who tested Mainz goalkeeper
with a powerful volley but the latter saved his shot for
a corner.
In the 69th minute, Werder scored their 4th
goal through Valdez who received a fine through pass from
Klasnic, advanced on the goalkeeper and buried the ball
home into the bottom corner to make the score 4-2.
After the 4th goal, Mainz desperately tried
to come back into the game, they got a couple of chances,
the first was for Auer who headed the ball just wide and
the 2nd was for Zidan who got the ball in the right side
of the box and crossed the ball dangerously in front of
goal but the goalkeeper Reinke saved it with his foot and
the defense cleared the dangerous situation in the end.
