In the 2nd half, Koln made a substitution by introducing
Scherz to the pitch, the player managed to score from his
first touch to the ball to give Koln a 1-2 lead. The goal
came through a counter attacking move for the guests and
the ball was played on the floor from the left wing to the
oncoming Sherz who hit it home with his right with a direct
and elegant touch.
After the 2nd goal for Koln, Mainz pushed
men forward more and more and created many chances while
Koln were happy to defend their lead.
A few minutes after Koln's goal, the referee
awarded Mainz a corner kick from the left wing. Da Silva
crossed the ball into the area to find Noveski who powered
a shot at goal but it was parried away by the goalkeeper
and another chance was squandered.
The pressure continued and Mainz won a freekick
in a good position, their Brazilian midfielder Da Silva
tired to hit the target from the freekick but he was denied
by the foot of the post.
Minutes later, Thurk missed a real chance
from close range as he hit the ball low to miss the target
by inches.
In the 54th minute, Addo sent a low pass to
Thurk who was surrounded by defenders in the box but he
managed to take the ball past two Koln players with a single
trick and fired a low shot into the back of the net to make
the score 2-2 and revive hopes for the homeside.
In the 61st minute, Mainz won a freekick in
midfield, Da Silva decided to chip the ball to the onside
Zidan who tricked his marker and fired the ball low into
the bottom corner with his right to give Mainz the lead.
In the 87th minute, the man of the match Thurk
received a long pass and managed to slide the ball from
the left sid eof the box in front of goal to find Auer who
tapped it in from close range to make the score 4-2 for
Mainz and to confirm their important home win.
