Mohamed Zidan's Mainz returned to official matches with a match against the Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the German cup (DFB Pokal) quarter final round.

Of course, a game against Bayern Munich at their home stadium and in front of 53000 enthusiastic fans was expected to be very tough for a club like Mainz. However, Zidan and his teammates made things tough for Bayern Munich and almost kicked the Bavarian side out of cup.

It was Zidan who opened the scoring as he scored from a penalty kick after a foul in the 21st min. Zidan placed the ball low into the bottom corner and Oliver Kahn couldn't get in there in time.

After the early goal, Mainz fought hard and managed to defend their lead till the 81st minute of the game. However, Bayern Munich's forward Claudio Pizzaro managed to score the equalizer just nine minutes before the final whistle. The original time ended in a 1-1 draw and the match went to extra time.

Four minutes after the kick off of the first extra time, Guerrero added the 2nd goal for Bayern Munich and it seemed that the Bavarians will end the game to their favor.

In the 104th minute, Mainz coach Jurgen Klopp decided to replace Zidan who suffered a serious injury after he collided with Bayern Munich's defender Lucio, and Weiland came on to replace the Egyptian who was taken to hospital to receive treatment.

Just a couple of minutes after the exit of Zidan, Mainz forward Petr Ruman revived hopes once again for Mainz as he scored the equalizer and the score became 2-2.

However, Bayern Munich star Pizzaro managed to score the dramatic winner in the 115th minute to grant Bayern Munich the ticket to the German Cup semi-finals and to knock Mainz out of the competition.
