Mainz Waste Two Points Against Duisburg

Mohamed Zidan's Mainz conceded a late goal to end their home match against Duisburg in a disappointing 1-1 draw. Zidan played from the start and helped his side to take the lead in the 27th minute through Da Silva. The Egyptian was taken off in the 64th minute and Mainz conceded a late goal after Zidan's exit to end the game in a 1-1 tie.

Egyptian star Mohamed Zidan played the game from the start. He played alongside Auer in attack and the Egyptian showed good football in the game.

The first chance in the game came through Zidan who sent a through pass to Michael Thurk and the latter hit the ball low from inside the six yards box at goal, the goalkeeper parried the ball away but it came off Auer's foot, hit the bar and went for a goalkick.

The guests replied with a chance which came through a combined mistake between the goalkeeper of Mainz and their last man who headed the ball behind to the goalkeeper but Duisburg's forward Dirk Lottner managed to steal it and tried to bury it home inside the empty net but his shot went wide.

Minutes later, Mainz midfielder Da Silva controlled the ball well at the edge of the box, entered the penalty are and fired a shot at goal. However, Da Silva's shot lacked power and the goalkeeper had no problems saving it.

In the 27th minute, A low pass was played to Mohamed Zidan, the Egyptian played the ball superbly with one touch to Auer and moved to receive the ball again from him. However, Auer was fouled outside the box and the referee whistled for a freekick for Mainz.

Da Silva struck the freekick and scored by sending the ball into the bottom corner to make the score 1-0 for Mainz.

After Mainz' goal, snow started to fall heavily which affected game play till the end of the first half.

With the start of the second half, Duisburg's Dirk Lottner was about to level the score for the guests through a freekick from long range, he struck the ball well to beat the defensive wall but his shot was denied by the post.

Minutes later, Mainz' Da Silva entered the area from left and fell onto the ground but the referee said play on and didn't count the penalty kick for the homeside.


The bar denied another attempt for Duisburg later on as Tobias Willi headed the ball from inside the box at goal but it came off the bar and went over.

The same player was about to level the score once again when he made use of fatal defensive error from Mainz side and intercepted a poor back pass, he advanced on the keeper and tried to bury the ball home but his shot went wide.

In the 64th minute, Zidan came off and was replaced by another forward (Petr Ruman).

A few minutes later, the referee denied Mainz another penalty kick when Benjamin Auer fell inside the area after a foul on him, the referee whistled for a foul at the edge of the box and didn't count the penalty for Mainz! The freekick was taken by Thurk and the goalkeeper managed to parry his shot away.

Just five minutes before the final whistle, Duisburg scored the equalizer after making use of confusion in the Mainz defense, the ball came to Uwe Mohrle who buried it home past the keeper from close range to make the score 1-1.

With this result, Duisburg remained 17th in the table while Mainz kept their 14th spot.
