Man City vs Wigan (1-0) [Zaki started]

Date: 17-1-2009
Wrote by: EP's webmaster

Wigan will rue the missed chances as they lost ther away clash with a ten men Manchester City by a single goal. Zaki had a decent game in terms of work rate. He forced the referee to send his marker Richard Dunne off after a kick by the Irish man. However, Zaki's finishing was poor as he missed an absolute sitter in the dying moments to prevent his side from scoring the equalizer.

Miss of the season for Zaki:

Without being harsh on Zaki, he simply should have scored from such a chance. A free header within the six yards box with the goalkeeper out of play and no marking must be a goal.

Zaki is clearly not at his best at the time being. He scored three goals since his injury but all of them came through penalty kicks. He became much more predictable and rusty since then and should try t get more involved in front of goal.

Without this miss, it would have been a decent game for the Egyptian but everyone will remember this miss and forget how hard Zaki worked throughout the game. Simply because the role of the striker is to score goals and not to miss them.

While the Egyptian missed the best chance in the game for his side, Wigan players missed many half chances as well. On the other side, Manchester City's Robinho missed a sitter as well in the first half but the fans will me more forgiving for him as his side won the game.

Dunne Red Card turned the tables:

In the first half, the homeside looked better than Wigan who didn't test Joe Hart. Robinho almost scored from a fine chip over Wigan goalkeeper but Bramble made a fine clearance. In addtion to this, the Brazilian Robinho missed another big chance while in the clear in front of goal but his final touch was poor as he sent the ball low and wide.

In the 2nd half, both sides were equivalent. However, a single defensive error by Scharner led to the only goal of the game. The Austrian defender headed the ball poorly to find Zabaleta on the edge of the box and the latter finished superbly as he sent the ball out of Kirkland reach to give Manchester City the lead.

A minute later, Zaki went with Richard Dunne in an aerial challenge and both players fell onto the ground. The latter kicked Zaki with his foot, the referee spoted it and brandished a red card to Dunne.

With ten men on the field, City were content to defend their lead and rely on counter attacks. On the other hand, Wigan started piling the pressure and were close to equalize.

Bruce went for an all out attack formation near the end as he brought Kapo, De Ridder and Camara but none of them was able to score the much needed equalizer.

The miss of the match was made by Zaki who failed to head the ball home after it bounced off the bar.

Despite this 2nd defeat in a row, Wigan will keep their 7th spot in the table but they still have a touch match ahead next week end versus Liverpool at the JJB stadium.
