Wigan managed to win finally. They defeated Sunderland away from home by two goals to one. Ben Watson volleyed home to grant Wigan the lead from the edge of the box but Leadbitter equalized for the home side after a defensive mix-up. However, N'Zogbia scored the winner for the Latics from a superb individual effort. Mido started the game as a lone striker and excelled despite not trying a single attempt on goal. He succeeded as a target man with his hold up play and fine flick ons. On the other side, Zaki sat on bench and replaced Mido with 15 miuntes left. He also did well in holding the ball and defending the lead.

Wigan Finally Win!

Mido and Zaki's Wigan finally ended their run of poor results with an important away win over Sunderland by two goals to one.

Steve Bruce started with 4-5-1 formation, by putting Mido alone at front as a lone man and target striker. he also gave ben Watson the chance to start in Lee Cattermole's place as the latter is suspended after his red card in the last week match.

The presence of Valencia and N'Zogbia on the wings, a creative midfielder who can finish in Ben Watson helped Wigan win deservedly. They controlled the midfield and used counter attacks effectively. Mido did a fine job as well holding the ball under pressure and winning the headers. The Egyptian also made many flick ons that could prove lethal if better finishers were there.

It was one of the few tiimes to see Zaki sitting on bench. This way due to Bruce's defensive tactic which relies on a target man who can hold the ball (Mido) and speedy wingers (N'Zogbia and Valencia) who can take the ball quickly to Sunderland's half.

Wigan's first goal came after 12 minutes from the start, It started with a long ball aimed at the target man (Mido), the Egyptian attempted to win the header from two defenders but the ball bounced back to the midfielder Ben Watson who let it drop and fired a volley into the bottom corner.

Wigan looked the better side after the goal and could have added more goals. On the other side, Sunderland had a real chance but Kirkland made two excellent successive saves to deny them.

Four minutes before half time, Sunderland scored a goal against the run of play as the ball dropped to Leadbitter who fired it home past Kirkland to level the score before half time.

However, N'Zogbia scored an excellent goal from a counter attacking move to reclaim the lead for the guests. He started a great solo run from his own half and took the ball to Sunderland's penalty area, he had a chance to lay the ball to Mido in front of goal but he decided to send it home with his left to make the score 1-2.

In the 2nd half, Wigan looked better thanks to their posession football. They won the tackles easily and spoiled Sunderland's attacks with their compact defense. The presence of five men in midfield gave them the advantage to control the rythm of play.

With only 15 minutes left on the clock, Bruce gave Zaki the chance to come on and replace his compatriot Mido. Zaki had little to do but he won a freekick for his side, he also moved well down the flanks to waste the remaining few minutes till the referee blew the final whistle.

It should be mentioned that Wigan will play Hul City in the next match at home. A win in that match might be enough for them to reclaim the 7th spot in table.
