Season Review: Rami Shaaban at Brighton

Date: 18-6-2005

After being released by the Gunners in last summer, the half Egyptian shot stopper spent over 6 months looking for a club.

In Summer, Arsenal had to release some players, one of them was Rami Shaaban who spent most of the time with the Gunners with a broken leg.

After Rami's recovery, he has been told by Arsenal's boss Arsene Wenger that he is too good to stay on bench, and so he will better find a starting place in another club.

Rami spent month after month searching for clubs, at first he travelled to France to trial with the French team Saint Etienne. However, they wanted Rami as a 2nd goalkeeper and the half Egyptian decided not to sign for them.

"About St. Etienne, it was a nice week in Biarritz. I got an offer but it was not good enough, and they saw me as a 'number two' to start with. I don't have a problem with this in the beginning because I lacked first team football last year, but I also felt that I wasn't 100% wanted, and that's not good." Rami commented to EP about the French offer.

Soon after his trial with St. Etienne, Rami spent some time on trial with the English Championship team Leeds United.

Leeds trialed Rami and the keeper seemed positive on the move, but after consideration of the Egyptian stopper, as well as Ian Bennet and Neil Sullivan, the latter of the three was signed.

After both St. Etienne and Leeds deals fell through, the wait continued for Rami as he spent over two months looking for a club.

After that, Norwegian side Lillestrom offered him another trial. However, Shaaban decided to reject the offer from Norwegian side Lillestrom, with which he was on trial for the last period. "I rejected it because it was too far money-wise," he told EP.

However, he quickly received interest from Bundesliga 2 side Saarbrücken, and a trial period with them seems to have been positive. Shaaban declared, "I went to Germany to train with Saarbrücken from the league under Bundesliga and it went well."

Then again, the deal with Saarbrücken didn't go through and Rami had to find another club.

At that time, Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam's Tottenham Hotspur offered Rami a trial at the club and the player was close to signing. However, the Spurs completed the signing of the Czech goalkeeper Radek Cerny from Slavia Prague to end Rami's hopes.

In February, Rami finally found a club . He spent a week on trial with the Championship club Brighton and Hove Albion and signed a 'one-game contract', but Brighton were keen to sign a longer contract if all went well.

Rami played a few games for Brighton and the club officials were impressed by his performance, so he signed a permanent deal with English Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion, which kept him at the club till the end of the season.

Now the season is over and the contract is over as well. Rami is now in search for a club again. The half Egyptian attracted the interest from some Egyptian clubs but he none of the deals went through. As well as this, there is a serious interest from some Turkish clubs in the player and the next few days/weeks will determine his next move.
