Brighton and Hove Albion have managed to avoid relegation
from the Championship, with a well fought 1-1 draw at
home to Ipswich Town. They finish the season 20th of
the 24 teams in the league.

Rami Shaaban remained on the bench for
the game, with the performances of on-loan Alan Blayney
in Rami's absence keeping him in the team. Adam El Abd
started the game in the back line, with a tough marking
job, assigned to Kuqi and Bent.
Brighton started the match knowing that a point would
be enough to guarantee their Championship status for
next season in what would be a great achievement for
the club. The results of the Crewe v Coventry and the
Nottingham Forest v Gillingham games would judge the
fate of the Seagulls if they were to lose. Crewe were
3 points behind Brighton and Gillingham 1 point behind,
prior to the final fixtures. Ipswich on the other hand
were chasing a second place automatic token to the Premiership,
starting the game on equal points with Wigan, who with
a superior goal difference were playing at home to Reading.
Ipswich Town took the lead in the 4th minute when Finnish
striker Kuqi capitalised on an Adam Virgo mistake and
finished well. Minutes later in the 10th minute Virgo
redeemed himself. Ipswich keeper Kelvin Davis saved
Paul Reid's header but Virgo was there for the rebound.
England Under-21 Darren Bent was causing trouble for
Adam El Abd and the Brighton defence, but El Abd denied
him with an excellent tackle inside the box. Soon after,
another tackle by El Abd on Bent looked to be a penalty,
but the referee waved play on, to the anger of the Ipswich
fans.

In the second half Ipswich pressurised the Brighton defence,
and Bent got on the end of a good Kuqi flick but his attempt
was saved well by Blayney. Chances followed, with Bent heading
wide, and Kuqi shooting wide of target.
In the last ten minutes, Ipswich applied even more pressure.
Counago fired a shot wide, and Kuqi struck once more, but
his shot was easy for Blayney. Brighton's solid defence held
on for a point. 1-1 the final score. Brighton celebrated survival,
with Ipswich left to think about their coming play-off fixture
with West Ham.
Crewe beat Coventry 2-1, but Gillingham could only achieve
a 2-2 draw with already relegated Nottingham Forest; a result
which sent the Gils down on goal difference. The draw was
vital for Brighton. Had they lost the game, results below
them would have sent them down, due to their very bad goal-difference.
More soon on the future of Rami and Adam whether at or away
from Brighton...
