Great display from Mido on his Boro Debut

Mido had some interesting comments about the last game and his wishes for the future with Boro. He was quoted on the official website of the club saying:

"It was very important for us to win," said the new signing. "It was a great result and I'm very proud with all the players that we turned the game around like that.

"I think it's one of the best feelings in football when you come from behind to win a game.

"It was a tough day for me, my last game was in April. It's a new team and it's a new way of playing but it's a great boost and I'm very pleased with the start."

"It wasn't the best strike, I got a bit lucky with it but if you want to score 20 goals a season, you will score four or five lucky goals.

"When I scored the goal and even when I was substituted I had the feeling that we were going to go on and win the game."

It had been a disappointing start for Boro after two opening defeats but Mido feels the team is beginning to take shape.

"There are a lot of young players here who want to give everything. They are hungry for football and that's the reason I came here.

"We have a lot of good footballers and I think when everybody is fit, there will be a lot of competition for places.

"If we fight for every game like we did against Fulham, I believe we can finish in the top six.

"This result gives us a big boost as we prepare for the Newcastle game, they're a good side but we have a great chance of getting another three points."

On the other side, Mido's new boss Gareth Southgate praised the Egyptian for beiing able to show this kind of form and score an important goal while he is still lacking in match practice.

"When I discussed the idea of playing Mido with the medical team on Friday their faces were a picture," said Southgate.

"He's had no pre-season, he's hardly trained for the last couple of weeks and he's not had a game for five months. All the scientific impressions were that we'd be mad to play him.

"I thought about playing him off the bench but I just felt he would give us that presence he's brought into the club since he's been here.

"He's an intelligent man and he's got a drive and a desire to play. He's already made a big difference in the dressing room.

"We've got a young dressing room and while he's still young, he's a bit worldly wise because he's obviously travelled around and he's confident.

"He's got more belief in some of our players that they've got in themselves. That side of his character will be great for us."
