Mido Assists Twice in Away Triumph

Date: 18-2-2007
Wrote by: EP's editor Islam Issa

Tottenham will undoubtedly take plenty of confidence into their upcoming away Premiership games. Though they have struggled on the road this season, they eased to a 4-0 win at Fulham and advanced to the quarter final of the FA Cup. Ahmed Hossam made two assists to Robbie Keane in the game, but his replacement Dimitar Berbatov scored twice in the 17 minutes he played!

Mido was given another run in the cup, and looked in fine shape. Though he was closer to scoring in Paul Robinson's goal than Jan Lastuvka's, he still looked bright and his flick-on heading was of the top quality.

Meanwhile, Aaron Lennon played on the right and Hossam Ghaly only saw a few minutes of action. The Egyptian did however help in the fourth goal after some good awareness.

There were reminders of just how lethal Mido and Keane can be at the front, when provided with decent long balls from Robinson. This showed after just five minutes when the keeper hit a kick forward for Mido to flick on with his head. It went into Keane's path, and the Ireland captain smashed the ball first-time into the net.

In the 68th minute the pair repeated their class. Mido did wonderfully to out-jump former team-mate Philippe Christanval, swinging Anthony Gardner's long ball on with his head. Again Keane blasted in, this time before the ball had bounced and from just inside the area.

Before this however, Mido had seriously tested his own keeper. Feeling pressure near the half-way line, the Egyptian played a long ball back to his own keeper, which bounced awkwardly and had to be cleared anywhere due to the pressure. From the resulting long throw, Mido headed for the corner of his own net, but Robinson made a superb diving stop to parry the ball away. After both occasions, the goalie was unhappy with Mido and made this clear.

Near the end of the first half, Mido had come close to scoring at the right end when he made a one-two with Young-pyo Lee, only to hit over from a tight angle. Mido did look good, but the worrying factor was that when Berbatov entered, he managed to score a double in just 17 minutes. Three or so minutes after replacing Mido, the Bulgarian made space on the left and shot at the post, before rebounding his own effort back into the goal.

Hossam Ghaly came on in the 83rd minute and provided a nice ball to help in the final goal. In the final minute he put a delicately chipped ball into the centre from the right-hand side. Keane flicked it on into the area, and Berbatov was onside to finish with complete ease.

Fulham's day wasn't a good one, and another of Mido's former team-mates, Vicenzo Montella, was sent off in the final seconds for a somewhat subconscious elbow on man of the match Keane.

Tottenham enter tomorrow's draw as strong candidates for the competition (Monday), but will more importantly hope to perform like this away from home in the league, in order to move back into the top half.
