Berbatov Puts Spurs Through

Tottenham's excellent European form continues as they have won their third match in the UEFA Cup, keeping their 100% record in three tough games. It was Dimitar Berbatov who scored at his former stadium to give Spurs the 1-0 win.

Mido and Jermain Defoe were replaced with Robbie Keane and the former Bayer Leverkusen hero Dimitar Berbatov at the front. Meanwhile, Aaron Lennon's return put Ghaly on the bench, with Martin Jol most probably looking ahead at the three league games the Egyptian will miss due to suspension.

It was the man in the spotlight, Dimitar Berbatov, who was bright early on. Having pressurised the defence and headed off target, he forced the first real save of the game when Butt had to dive to stop his low shot. Berbatov ended up getting a goal against his old team, which he didn't celebrate. Robbie Keane put a nice through ball for Lennon, who had made a good run. The youngster's first touch was heavy but he forced a scrambling save from the oncoming Butt, and the ball returned for Berbatov to tap into the goal.

Leverkusen responded but bar a low shot from outside the box, they didn't look too threatening. Spurs themselves applied some pressure and some half-chances ended the first 45 minutes of the encounter.

The second half started off strong, particularly from the hosts who tested Robinson twice, once with Freier's shot after a through pass, and a free header from the following corner from Babarez. The best chance for the Bundesliga team came when Freier crossed the ball low from the right wing by-line. Voronin shot from inside the box only for Robinson to jump in the way of the ball.

Spurs should have finished the game off when Steed Malbranque, on his second start for Spurs, played the ball to Keane on the left, who put it in for Berbatov just yards away from the goal. Astonishingly, the Bulgarian missed the ball which he had to merely tap in from close range under no pressure.

The end to end action continued, as Keane struck a shot from eight yards out which was saved by Butt before Schneider hit a superb long shot which passed Robinson but came right back off the post. England's number one had more to do when Voronin hit a bouncing shot at him, which he managed to deal with.

The entire BayArena clapped Berbatov off as Ahmed Hossam replaced him for the final quarter of an hour of the match. The Egyptian didn't have much to do but was stopped from shielding the ball in the final minutes as it was taken off him by a couple of defenders who tried to carve an attack out, only for it to be successfully cleared by Spurs' back line.

In the final seconds the ball fell for a completely free Mido in the area, with Keane in support. Mido tried to place the ball into the far corner of the goal, but Butt stopped it. Keane reacted angrily to Mido, who felt he had the right to shoot and responded to him verbally.

It didn't matter, and Tottenham are comfortably into the knockout stages... More soon on EP...
