Mido Scores Twice & Assists in Easy Win

Date: 26-10-2006

Although Tottenham played against a team three divisions below them, they showed some serious quality and came out 5-0 winners. Milton Keynes Dons were unlucky not to have scored, but Spurs deserved the huge number of goals.

Mido celebrates his first goal

Striker Ahmed Hossam scored twice for Tottenham; one wonderful finish. He also managed to make a fabulous assist to Jermain Defoe, who also netted two. Meanwhile, Hossam Ghaly also played a full game and provided substitute Robbie Keane with an assist for Spurs' final goal. Ghaly could have had another assist had Mido done better with a free header in the first half.

It was obviously an easy game, though Martin Jol will not have forgotten the League Cup exit last season against Grimsby Town. The match was also important for Jermain Defoe, who deferred attention from the infamous weekend incident and reminded everyone of his goalscoring abilities. Mido also showed that he is returning to form, if not for scoring, then for playing two full games in the matter of days. The fans seem to have rebuilt their faith in him, and were in the second half, chanting his name.

MK Dons almost surprised Tottenham inside the opening 30 seconds, and had it not been for a life-saving challenge from behind by Anthony Gardner, the hosts would probably have been in front.

Mido dropped back and collected the ball well, showing good shielding and quick passing, winning a free-kick in a dangerous place after holding onto the ball. The eventual result of Mido's efforts was a Davids shot which flew wide. Spurs kept attacking, with Defoe striking a long shot which needed a good save.

The biggest disappointment of the night came when Mido missed an easy header after a perfect delivery from Hossam Ghaly. For the third time this season, the two compatriots linked up perfectly, but Mido failed to convert yet again. Ghaly crossed the ball wonderfully from the right wing - the position in which he started the game - while Mido avoided the offside trap to get a completely free header from around ten yards out. However, he headed the ball with the top of his head, and it went horribly over and wide.

The Egyptian striker was quick to make amends, and netted a decent goal minutes later. In the 36th minute, Ziegler, who was given a rare start, put a low cross in from the left after a good move. Mido slid at the ball with his left foot from just outside the six-yard box, hitting a firm half-volley which flew into the goal.

Defoe added another before half-time, though it was the creation of Mido, who fought hard for the ball and took it forward from the half-way line before putting a perfect through pass to his team-mate to chip over the keeper and in.

Just five minutes into the second half, Spurs scored again. Hossam Ghaly got the ball on the edge of the box and tried to put the ball through for Defoe. However, his attempt was blocked and returned to Tom Huddlestone in the centre, who managed to squeeze the ball to Defoe to tap in from close range.

On the hour mark Mido scored his second of the day. Murphy played a through ball to Defoe on the left flank. The England international went for a hat-trick but his shot was denied by the feet of the goalkeeper. The ball returned to Mido who rebounded it firmly with one touch into the goal.

Defoe could have got his hat-trick but hit wide, while at the other end, Spurs looked like they were about to concede. Cerny was forced to make a reflex save, before McLeod struck the post for MK Dons. Robinson's substitute also made a couple of stops to deny the home team's increasing pressure from paying off.

Martin Jol moved Ghaly into the centre of the midfield, replacing Tom Huddlestone with right winger Aaron Lennon. Moreover, Mido was kept on the pitch and Defoe was taken off for Robbie Keane. It was the Ireland captain that topped the day off with the fifth goal. Hossam Ghaly made use of his central position and provided a chipped through ball to Keane. The ball came off a defender's head but stayed in Keane's path and it was an easy finish.
