Glorious Mido Goal Gives Spurs Win

Date: 22-10-2006
Wrote by: EP's editor Islam Issa

Ahmed Hossam's magnificent goal in first half stoppage time continued Spurs' good run. They are now unbeaten for five games - winning four - and more importantly, haven't lost in the league for three games. The 1-0 win against West Ham was most welcome, and would never have been without Mido's brilliant creativity and eye for goal.

It was disappointing for Spurs fans to see Dimitar Berbatov out after finally managing to perform well in mid-week, but Mido didn't let them down. The Egyptian started along-side Jermain Defoe, while Hossam Ghaly's place was lost to the returning Aaron Lennon on the right. Danny Murphy also made way for Edgar Davids.

Spurs had some early breaks via Lennon, but Robert Green was only called upon when Jermain Defoe shot right at him after beating Konchesky on the right wing. Paul Robinson had a save of his own to make when Marlon Harewood got around Michael Dawson and hit a strike which Robinson had to dive to save.

The game started to get tense when Mascherano committed a clear foul on Defoe from behind. The striker reacted by nibbling at the Argentine while both were on the ground. The incident escalating, Mido running across to show Mascherano his discontent, before both initial culprits were booked.

In the third minute of added time Mido scored his first of the season. Davids ran on the left and swept a ball into the centre, just outside the left-hand side of the six-yard box. Mido controlled it with his left despite the marking, putting the ball a couple of yards forward and into the air, before hitting a low volley onto the far post and into the goal. Mido's celebration, in which he took off his jersey, resulted in a yellow card.

In the second half, Mido could have scored a second. The impressive Tom Huddlestone swung a ball into the box which the Egyptian stretched to from close range but could only get the slightest of touches. It would have been a certain goal had Mido made real connection.

Spurs were perhaps guilty of not getting a second against a Hammers team that found it hard to create chances. Defoe had a chance to give Lennon a goal, but chose to go alone greedily after swiveling inside the area.

Hossam Ghaly came on for the final 12 minutes, but it was Mido who was once more involved as he headed a Chimbonda cross at target, forcing a save from Robert Green.

It was a fine result at the end for Tottenham against their London rivals. Even better was the fact that Mido broke his dead-lock. It looks as though Spurs are recovering their season, particularly with both Berbatov and Mido returning to scoring ways this week...
