Second Half Frenzy Sinks Spurs

Date: 23-9-2006
Wrote by: EP's editor Islam Issa

Spurs are yet to pick up a point away from home this season, and today it was clear why. The line-up just hasn't jelled yet, and the few chances that Spurs did get were horribly wasted.

Not enough time for Mido to make an impact

Martin Jol made another change in the attack, putting the two 'little-men' together in Defoe and Keane, leaving Mido on the bench. The Egyptian only ended up getting a few minutes of play at the end.

Last time the sides met it was Mido's "preparation game" for the African Cup of Nations, where he didn't have a chance to do much. The game was then decided by a spectacular volley from Harry Kewell, and today Liverpool chose to continue the wonderful goals against Spurs.

Hossam Ghaly - who pleaded for action this week - didn't make the match squad, but weak performances from Tainio and Murphy could allow the Egyptian to see more action in coming games.

The first half saw few chances, though Ledley King had a free header inside the box which he somehow failed to connect with. At the other end, Chimbonda headed a cross onto his own post and it was luckily cleared before anyone could rebound.

In the second half Spurs fans thought they were in the lead when Edgar Davids, after seconds of coming on, ran powerfully on the left before tapping the ball square into Jenas' path. Jenas was just a couple of yards out but slid the ball wide of the goal!

Straight away, Liverpool responded. Gerrard got the ball on the right and did a sublime piece of skill to get to the byline before putting the ball across the face of the goal. Bellamy had a chance maybe easier than Jenas' but somehow hit the post. The ball returned for Mark Gonzalez who struck it first-time to make the score 1-0.

Liverpool were ahead instead of behind and now could add to their lead. Luis Garcia calmly chipped a through pass for Ghaly's former team-mate Kuyt, who controlled the ball brilliantly from behind him before striking it with menace into the net.

Mido came on for Muprhy but 11 minutes were never going to be enough given the situation. In fact, Liverpool became rampant and John Arne Riise was able to blast a low shot home from distance to top up a dreadful day for Tottenham.

Though Spurs should have maybe taken the lead, at the end of the day it was clear that there was something missing between the midfield and attack. Hardly any chances came to the men at the front, and the midfield simply didn't have as good an effect as is possible. Aaron Lennon's importance has clearly been shown, and it is safe to say that Ghaly's game against Manchester United was one of the finer performances any midfielder has shown this season for Tottenham. Manager Martin Jol felt the midfield is getting better however, in his post-match interview.
