Racism Towards Mido Shocks English Football

Date: 21-11-2005
Wrote by: EP's editor Islam Issa, England

West Ham United fans taunted Mido with racist remarks, which have an impact English football should be proud of. All the papers have criticised West Ham, while everyone is sticking up for Mido, from the anti-racism authorities to the press.

EgyptianPlayers.com had been informed by Tottenham fans last night that Mido was a subject of racist remarks from the away stand. This came after EP were first to write about the chants sung at Mido at Southampton's Saint Mary's Stadium last season.

This time, the chants were more obvious, and it was not hard to pick it up even from the press box. "Shoe, shoe, shoe bomber" the fans sung, as well as "Your mum's a terrorist."

The game had seen a few players return to White Hart Late such as Sheringham, Etherington, Zamora and Konchesky, while Spurs' Carrick and Defoe played against their ex-club. To add to this, Mido, an Egyptian, and Benayoun, an Israeli, were on the pitch.

Although one man was arrested for racist chants, more is going to be done about it. Leon Mann, said on behalf of Let's Kick Racism Out of Football organisation said, "We will be contacting West Ham about the incident. A lot of progress has been made but the introduction of players such as Mido and Yossi Benayoun present further challenges because fans need to understand that it is a form of racism."

Martin Jol was quick to comment on the situation too, calling the taunts "tasteless" and comparing the Spurs fans' acknowledgement to ex-player Sheringham with what the Hammers fans did.

Paul Stalteri, whom Mido recently told EP was a great player, commented on the racist remarks saying, "Obviously it doesn't belong in sport. It is a form of racism."

He added, "He (Mido) scored a great goal so he gave them the right answer."

Famous football commentator Clive Tyldesley wrote in his report for the Telegraph, "It (the goal) was the best possible response from the Egyptian forward to tasteless taunting by some of the visiting supporters."

Whilst a big deal has been made of the issue, it is merely because it is a new form of abuse that some English fans were relieved to find. They must have tried every single form of abuse at players, and an Egyptian is a new species and a new idea which they had never encountered and hence tried to make full use of. But the response has been hefty, and may well remain so for days to come.

But The Times' column in their sports section sums the story up, a title next to the game report screaming "MIDO TAUNTED BY FANS" but at the bottom a photo of Mido celebrating his stunning goal... Does it really matter?
