Double-Standards at Spurs

Both Pascal Chimbonda and Robbie Keane have reacted angrily recently to being substituted off, but neither has faced even a fraction of what Hossam Ghaly had to.

  • It could easily be argued that Spurs is running double-standards. The reaction to Ghaly's shirt-throwing incident was preventing him from his wages, freezing him half of the next season, not allowing him one more game to receive his promised bonus, not letting him train with the club, aside from the £40,000 fine and making him issue public apology.

Yet the public apology wasn't even enough for the Spurs fans, who ended up theoretically terminating his contract at the club.

Ghaly said he would not to go to Spurs after Martin Jol's exit, for it was the board who made him go in order to appease the fans, and so the club, from its roots, reacted against the Egyptian.

On the other hand, the recent League Cup final saw Pascal Chimbonda storm down the tunnel after being calmed down by team-mates (pictured), despite the momentous occasion and the importance of the tie. He remains a Spurs player and received merely a warning, despite being spotted in night clubs that night after the win.

Chimbonda was angry at being subbed off...

Robbie Keane is the stranger case. Less than two weeks ago he stormed off the pitch after being taken off, wripping his captain's arm-band off his shirt and throwing the training suit given to him onto the ground. Firstly, this was not the first time. Against Birmingham City, when Mido came on and he realised he would not, Keane charged into the tunnel cursing and punching.

Keane threw the captain arm band away following his substitution

This time, Keane's reaction was not even seen as insulting to his position of captain. The fact he aggressively took his arm-band off merited no reaction. He is the captain and should be let off, one could say? Surely, he should be leading by example if he is skipper.

A member of Spurs' fan club said to EgyptianPlayers.com: "If Keane had thrown his arm-band or shirt it would have been very different.

"Spurs fans were frustrated anyway by Ghaly's style of play, and Martin Jol was sticking up for him as he had to justify buying him.

    "Keane is a hero here."

Keane has scored over 100 goals for the club, and therefore should show more commitment. Ghaly had played a single season, but in it, lost four teeth permanently and came straight back on to fight for his team. He also won penalty kicks, was their league campaign's top assister of goals, and played out of position without complaint. All of this was forgotten.

Keane, however, even received praise from English press!!!

A writer for The Times commented:

"I haven’t got the slightest problem with what he did and I doubt Juande Ramos, the Tottenham Hotspur head coach, has, either.

"Managers love it when players show they care.

"It was the third match in succession he has been substituted, which must have contributed to his disappointment."

Let's say that Ghaly, when speaking after the game, said he was angry at himself, not Jol, as he was under-performing for his club. Ghaly was substitute to start with in the game he got angry in, and in many others, not disappointed that he wasn't playing a full game!

Shane Long of Reading threw his shirt down after being subbed off last week, but received no public fine, only a chat from the manager and a warning.

The whole issue poses many questions about double-standards at Tottenham, and maybe some more questions about the English game's acceptance of foreign talent, because with foreign talent comes a different culture...
