Date: 28-4-2007
Wrote: EP's editor Islam Issa, England

Hossam Ghaly assisted one of the finest strikes of the season as Spurs overcame a lacklustre Middlesbrough 3-2 at the Riverside Stadium. The Egyptian midfielder returned to selection but Mido remained an absentee.

  • Ghaly played most of the game, starting as right midfielder but drifting into the centre when needed in one of Spurs' most organised midfield performances this season. Jermaine Jenas excelled in the centre, keeping his mind on interceptions and simple passes. Dider Zokora was a neusance for Boro when in his defensive half, and Steed Malbranque and Ghaly were able to interchange positions throughout the game providing plenty of outlets for Tottenham.

    EP Ratings:

    Middlesbrough: Schwarzer 5, Davies 5 (Arca 64' 5), Woodgate 6, Pogatetz 6, Taylor 5, Cattermole 5 (Johnson 40' 6)), Boateng 5, Rochemback 6, Downing 6, Viduka 7, Yakubu 6 (Lee 70' 5)

    Tottenham: Robinson 8, Chimbonda 7, King 7, Dawson 5, Rocha 7, Zokora 6,
    Jenas 8, Ghaly 8 (Lennon 72' 7), Malbranque 7, Berbatov 8, Keane 8

Ghaly began the game by running into the centre of the park and to the left side too. He showed some decent one-touch passing as Boro pressurised Spurs in very tight spaces early on. His first major involvement was some nice control and running before he whipped a ball from the right across the field to Dimitar Berbatov. However, the Bulgarian controlled the ball late and wasted what should have been a better chance; his shot easily saved.

But Berbatov made amends immediately, showing some nice footwork inside the box before adding to that some amazing vision. He poked the ball unexpectedly right, in front of Robbie Keane, who was able to tap into the net.

Spurs continued to dictate the pace of the game and a great move saw Ghaly receive the ball on the right. The Egyptian managed to reach it ahead of the defender, before crossing into the area to win a corner kick. However, he did give the ball away carelessly on a couple of occasions, but Boro
    were unable to make use.

In the 25th minute, Malbranque made a great ball from the left into the area, into which Ghaly was making an amazing run. The former Feyenoord man managed to reach and control the ball but was blocked out by the defender before he could make use of the opportunity. He continued to find space well, and when the ball came out to him on the edge of the box he patiently rounded a player before laying the ball perfectly in front of Zokora. The Ivorian - who despite taking handfuls of shots per game is yet to score for Tottenham - didn't surprise many by hitting yet another wild shot off
    target.

Boro only managed to attack properly in the closing stages of the half, and Mark Viduka's effort was dragged wide of the target to signal a good 45 minutes for the visitors from London.

The hosts' intentions were obvious after the interval, but Ghaly continued to excel. He reached the ball well at his defensive far post, scrambling it away. And at the other end, he was able to assist one of the finest goals of the season. The Egyptian received the ball on the right, waited, and
chipped into the centre, where from distance, Berbatov struck on the volley into the back of the net! The goal in the 47th minute helped Spurs feel they were in comfort zone.

They could have added a third. A long ball saw yet another fine off-the-ball run from Ghaly, but keeper Mark Schwarzer came sprinting out of his box to head away. And on the hour mark Keane came close in a one-on-one situation.

Boro realised they had to get back into the game, and Rochemback began to show his abilities. An unbelievable pass in which he looked in the other direction fooled everyone, but Viduka's final shot went over. The striker compensated in the 66th minute when he headed in superbly from a Stuart
Downing cross, after Pascal Chimbonda had failed to clear the ball. It is fair to say that Ghaly's pressurising on the right meant Chimbonda was able to do plenty of defending from the centre; another positive the Egyptian added to Spurs' game.

Viduka thought he had equalised two minutes after the first goal but Paul Robinson made one of the saves of the season from the close range strike. Middlesbrough were now taking the game to a higher tempo, and Rochemback was able to skill his way past Ghaly on the touch-line, but when the
Egyptian recovered the ball, the Brazilian took his legs away in a nasty kick which should have resulted in a booking.

In the 72nd minute, Ghaly made way for Lennon, after showing his worth in a decent showing. More of the same followed, Robinson denying Viduka and before new Ghaly's replacement ran well on the right and squared the ball to Keane to fire home.

Middlesbrough did recover a goal in the final minutes from an Emanuel Pogatetz header, but Spurs took three deserved points.

If Spurs, as expected, win their match in hand at Charlton they will jump up to 5th place. They are trying hard and on track to guarantee European qualification and avoid the summer wrath of Intertoto Cup action.
