Joy for Ghaly; Frustration for Mido

Date: 17-3-2007

The home game against Watford proved an easy one for Spurs. Though they didn't show their best, they managed a 3-1 win, with Hossam Ghaly scoring. Mido was given the chance to play a full game but failed to net.

All of Aaron Lennon, Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov were rested in order to be ready for the Cup quarter-final replay against Chelsea. Both Ghaly and Mido therefore, played the 90 minutes, and had some positive impacts on the game. Ghaly in particular showed some superb touches in the second
half, and his passing was generally excellent.

Mido however couldn't prove his critics wrong. He had a couple of average attempts, but more significantly missed a massive chance from just yards out after the ball rebounded kindly to him. Instead, there were two somewhat unlikely scorers: his compatriot Ghaly, and goalkeeper Paul
Robinson!

From the start, Mido had resorted to the wings and his own half. Though his approach play was fine it was too often not his job, and only really merited a few corner kicks.

Spurs tried to attack the struggling visitors but found it hard to test Manchester United loanee and current England number one Ben Foster. Mido received a square pass from Steed Malbranque in the first half, did well to stretch and reach it, but dragged his foot around it to send the ball well over the bar.

Ghaly too was involved. His tackle and short pass to Jermaine Jenas led to a Jermain Defoe shot, which was well saved. And the Egyptian midfielder almost set up the Egyptian striker, playing a nice cross into the box which Mido failed to connect with. Mido's desperation was clear, smacking the
ground but getting up quickly to keep trying to prove his worth.

In the final minutes of the half a dinking cross from Pascal Chimbonda on the right after a passing move involving Ghaly resulted in a great header from Jenas, making the score 1-0.

At the start of the second half, Mido managed to get a header at goal but it was stopped by the keeper, who minutes later, conceded to his rival for England number one. Robinson's free-kick from deep in his own half bounced inside Foster's box before going over him and into the net!

Foster then made a great save against a Tom Huddlestone shot, but minutes later spilt a weak effort from the midfielder, who may have been better off playing Ghaly into the move on the right. However, the rebound returned to Mido, and it was his chance to get on the score-board. The Egyptian ran from an onside position towards the ball, just yards out, and thought he had scored. However, his casual poke with the outside of the left foot was stopped by the stretching keeper's legs, and it was not to be...

But it wasn't a bad day all round for the Pharaohs. Ghaly got another goal; his first in the English Premiership. As with his other two goals at Spurs, he started it all as he gathered the ball inside his own half. He marched forward in the 84th minute before spreading the ball to the right, where
three Spurs players, namely Defoe, Huddlestone and Lennon worked the ball back to him just inside the area. He shot well, the ball going beyond Foster and into the right side of the net, though it was helped by a deflection.

Watford pulled a goal back in the final minute after Chimbonda failed to clear the ball on the left side of the defence. Tommy Smith's square pass left Darius Henderson with an easy finish.

A couple of days ago Martin Jol had shocked many with comments that he has "no back-up for Berbatov", suggesting that Mido can't replace the Bulgarian. Today was an indication that on current form, that may well be true. But Ahmed Hossam needs playing time and faith.
