Tottenham Top Group in Convincing Style

Date: 15-12-2006

An all too comfortable game, perhaps epitomising the few challenges this season's UEFA Cup has provided for Tottenham Hotspur so far. The London club won 3-1 against Dinamo Bucharest, in a match that on occasions looked like a training session. Spurs passed the ball wonderfully and instigated the pace from beginning to end, putting them in top spot in the group.

Spurs will face a 3rd placed team from one of the other groups in the last 32 of the competition. This gives us the possibility of seeing Hossam Ghaly against his former club Feyenoord, who went through yesterday.

In today's match, Ghaly played on the right for the first half, but seemed to take a more free role after the interval, moving across the pitch constantly in an effective manner. Aaron Lennon added pace on the left, Tom Huddlestone a massive presence in the middle, and Didier Zokora was the excellent 'unknown soldier' throughout the 90 minutes. Meanwhile, Mido started and remained on the bench; Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov were active and grabbed Spurs' goals.

Ghaly worked well with most players on the pitch, and within seconds of the kick off almost provided an assist. He hit a superb chipped pass, first-time, from the right into the centre for Berbatov, who controlled poorly what would have been a clear scoring chance.

It was a good fast start from Tottenham, who continued to pile the pressure on until it paid dividends. After quarter of an hour, Berbatov hit the ball straight at Dinamo keeper Hayeu, who decided to throw the ball right back to the Bulgarian, who struck the ball powerfully into the goal from just outside the area.

Shortly later, Defoe could have got another but hit the bar after fine play from Ghaly. Lennon found Ghaly on the right, and the Egyptian made a quick stretching touch to Defoe just outside the box. The striker struck but it hit the woodwork.

Spurs continued to make chances with ease, and Hossam Ghaly took a long distance shot of his own later in the half, which was low and firm but was held well by the diving keeper. And before the half came to a close Spurs made sure they had a comfortable lead, as Defoe raced through and netted neatly after an unbelievable low kick from Robinson which covered most of the pitch and found its way straight to the striker.

Five minutes into the second half, and Ghaly was involved heavily in Spurs' third. A counter attack lead to Berbatov playing a ball from right to left which found the Egyptian in space. He could have gone alone but decided to unselfishly lay the ball square for the advancing Lennon. The keeper, who had come out eight yards or so, saved the shot, but it returned for Defoe who finished with ease.

Spurs had plenty of opportunities to add more, and Defoe may be unhappy with some team-mates not providing him on occasions when he could have got a hat-trick. Berbatov too should have added to his goal, and was given a chance to do so from a central shot which the goalkeeper saved. It was provided by Ghaly who beat the left-back Pulhac in absolute style, stepping over the ball and showing silky footwork that was a joy to see (watch Ghaly's action in the game in EgyptianPlayers.com's multimedia section).

Tottenham were really enjoying their game and almost adding more goals, especially via Callum Davenport who caused havoc in set pieces after coming on. Amidst this comfort however, they conceded to substitute Mendy, who slotted the ball past Robinson in added time.
