Date: 14-3-2007
Wrote: EP's editor Islam Issa

Konyaspor struggled against giants Fenerbahce in a game that saw Abdelzaher El Saka's side well beaten by three goals. Both the Egyptian and his team-mates struggled and failed to stop the Fener attacks. On the bright side, Mohamed Abdullah started his first game for the club at a big venue.

El Saka and Konya struggled against Fener...

Though Fener's recent form wasn't great, they were in full control in this game. They pressurised Konya and made chances with ease, and only near the end of the game did the visitors manage to create chances. This meant that Konya's attacks were non-evident in the first half, in which they were completely overwhelmed. Mohamed Abdullah, therefore, was unable to have any impact on the game in the 45 minutes he played.

A series of big chances fell to Fener's attackers, who had the ball cleared off the goal-line twice before El Saka intelligently cleared the ball away for a corner.

El Saka stuck to Tuncay Sanli and managed to block him well but conceded a corner in the process. From the resulting corner, the ball was scrambled into the goal by Marco Aurelio and Fener went in leading at half-time.

The goal had come in stoppage time and given Fener confidence for the second half. They added two more in the opening quarter of an hour after the interval, through Mateja Kezman and Alex.

Another corner tested Konya, and Lugano, whom El Saka was marking, unfortunately managed to head the ball towards the goal. There, Kezman was ready to pounce the ball in from close range.

The third goal signalled an early end to Konya's game, as a wripping and momentous move ended up with a fine finish from Alex, making the score 3-0.

To add the the already big blows of Konya's day, the team's captain El Saka picked up a booking and has therefore reached four. He will miss the big upcoming game against champions Galatasaray.
